FCoE: “Soft” FCoE Integration

by dave on July 2, 2009

There appears to be quite the interesting discussion going on over at Scott Lowe‘s blog regarding FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) as its relationship to the data center, VMware, and, pretty much everything else. I love watching people put their thoughts to eletronic ink (via the comments section) but recently, I’ve had some pretty interesting conversations around FCoE that focus on different approaches to FCoE within the data center.

It all started with a phone call…

Dell and VMware: A match made in heaven

by dave on June 3, 2009

#helpnick

Cool new toy just landed in my lab for a production VMware vSphere implementation.  This one is going to one of our internal groups that has a moderate load Microsoft SQL implementation. I’ve included a slideshow below so that you can see some of the absolutely fantastic features this Dell R610 (and even it’s bigger brother the R710) bring to the table for virtualization. There are also a couple of shots showing of some of the upcoming Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) that will be coming down the road at some point from QLogic.  I know, I know…this shows my relatively “geeky” side but honestly, when you get to do THIS for a living, how can you not get excited?!?!?!  Enjoy.  Shoot me any questions around the R610 and I’ll try to answer them.  I’ll try to get a build document put together as well (no promises).

Note: you can get to the static picture set here.

Configuring nVidia SATA controllers for use with VMware ESX

October 16, 2008

Part of the beauty of ESX 3.x from a hardware support standpoint was the addition of SATA as a viable install media for the hypervisor and service console.  However, opening up support for SATA also included a few hiccups along the way, most related to the SATA controllers officially supported by VMware.  For folks like […]
