Life with Qlogic’s 5802V: Part 1

If you follow me on Twitter at all, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of Qlogic.  I appreciate the functional simplicity of what Qlogic designs encompass as well as the “get business done” attitude that they bring to their switches, HBAs, NICs, and CNAs.  Imagine my happiness, then, when I got ahold of one of their latest “edge” fibre channel switches, the SANbox 5802V.  The SANbox 5802V follows the typical edge-switch formula: 20 SFP ports for either 4Gb/s SFPs or 8Gb/s SFP+, 4 stacking ports that default at 10Gb/s Fibre Channel connection and can be upgraded to 20Gb/s FC when additional bandwidth is needed, a serial and IP-based management port setup, and dual redundant power supplies (the 5802V ships with 2 PSUs; the 5800V model ships with only 1).

Video Overview of the Qlogic 5802V

As much as I like to talk about Qlogic, there are times when you’ve just got to let someone else tell their story.  In this case, Qlogic’s Marty Holmes gives a very thorough video analysis of the SanBox 5802V Fibre Switch.

This is my current switch of choice if you need small departmental Fibre Channel switches that support 8gb, 4gb, and 2gb FC.  The technical specifications can be found here.

I’m typically in the position of designing storage solutions for external customers based upon established protocols and best practices here at EMC.  We design based on our work with Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, etc. and the solutions development that happens with these partners.  It’s definitely an exciting challenge to take a customer’s needs and wrap them into a solution set that allows for performance, capacity, and future growth.  What’s even more exciting, however, is getting the chance to design and implement a storage solution for an internal “customer.”  I figured this would be a good chance to lay out the work that goes on in designing a storage solution coupled with a VMware host solution as well.

I’ll break this journey into several parts and include the appropriate Visios (as permitted).  So, without further ado, let’s get started!!!
