Managing the Information Flood…

As my brother posted yesterday, part of optimizing workflow is understanding how you relate to the information that you receive.  Depending on your method of information ingestion (the use of eating analogies is on purpose), you’re going to optimize your environment in a specific way. Stu Miniman also kicked off a strong examination on optimizing your computer layout for information processing.  

A few of the things that are especially critical to understand related to your process of learning and cognition.  Rather than lapse into an entire article devoted solely to learning systems, I’ll use my personal story to help you understand learning and cognition.  Let’s kick this off, then…

In part one of the COSS series, we discussed the nature of content within the cloud.  After determining the nature of the content being stored, it is important to understand how this unstructured and structured content will be stored.  The mechanism for storage has significant impact on a provider’s Service Level Agreement (SLA) to the end user and can also promote the concept of tiered storage within the cloud as well.  To evaluate this storage mechanism, you need to pull apart the storage path to determine what influences it has on the content being stored.  Technologies such as encryption, de-duplication, compression, object-model storage (a la XAM), and even the underlying file system can have a large part in storage and the subsequent retrieval.

Future Storage Systems: A pause in workflow

Since I started this article series, I’ve had the awesome opportunity to have my ideas (well, some of the early articles at least) reviewed by person(s) who deal with the actual infrastructure of storage systems day in, day out.  The benefit of such peer review is that you get to learn at the symbolic “feet” of the masters and discover flaws, omissions, and understated features that need to be understood and incorporated.  This post is dedicated to some of those discussions and, where applicable, my understanding of how the FSS either incorporates or misses the boat.
