Servers for Sale!

by dave on October 20, 2008

From time to time, I like to clean out some of the “older” hardware lying around the lab.  So, for your perusal today, I’ve got 3 servers that are going to be up for grabs (complete with the requisite Paypal/GoogleCheckout links).  Click on through to see the descriptions and pricing.

Note:  Each of these servers has run VMWare ESX 3.5 (up to Update 2) without issue.  The two AMD boxes, in particular, have at least 6 months of uptime between them except for minor hardware upgrades done along the way.  VERY impressive boxes to use with ESX.

Server #1:  The AMD Barcelona Powerhouse

This server is a really great box for dense computing with a lot of power.  It’s a 1U, twin node (meaning two complete systems in that single U) with dual quad-core AMD Opteron 2356 processors. The chassis and mainboards are from Tyan and you can read more about them here.  Here are the specifications.

Node A:

2 x AMD Opteron 2356 quad-core processors

16 x 2GB low profile DDR2-667 ECC/Registered memory from Unigen

1 x 250Gb Seagate single platter SATA drive (primary)

1 x 1TB Seagate SATA drive (secondary)

Node B:

2 x AMD Opteron 2356 quad-core processors

8 x 2Gb DDR2-667 ECC/Registered memory from Kingston

1 x 250Gb Seagate single platter SATA drive (primary)

1 x 1TB Seagate SATA drive (secondary)

Server 1

Server #2:  The Control Station

I actually put together this box from a few separate Tyan components.  Foundationally, it’s based on the Tyan S3992-E mainboard with the GT24 chassis.  You can read more about it here.  This again is a 1U server.

2 x AMD Opteron 2352 quad core processors

1 x Adaptec SAS host RAID Card

3 x 73GB 15K SAS drives (1 Seagate and 2 Fujitsus)

4 x 2GB of DDR2-667 ECC/Registered memory from Kingston

Server 2

Server #3: Infiniband Powerhouse

Another absolutely wonderful server with an added layer of flexibility in that it has onboard DDR Infiniband from Mellanox.  Couple that with the Intel 5400 series Northbridge and DDR2-800 FB-DIMM support and you’ve got a powerful 1U.  If you want to read more about it, click here.  Similar to Server #1, you have 2 nodes present in this box as well.

Node A:

1 x Intel 5405 processor (can support 2)

4 x 4GB DDR2-667 FB-DIMMs (16Gb total); can support DDR2-800 ECC/Registered FB-DIMMs as well

1 x Seagate 80Gb SATA drive (primary)

1 x Additional heatsink for processor #2

Node B:

1 x Intel 5405 processor (can support 2)

4 x 4GB DDR2-667 FB-DIMMs (16Gb total); can support DDR2-800 ECC/Registered FB-DIMMs as well

1 x Seagate 80Gb SATA drive (primary)

1 x Additional heatsink for processor #2

Server 2

*Warranty Notes on all Systems: No warranty is included with any parts included in these servers including processors, mainboard, memory, etc. No warranty service will be offered.
